Your AI, Your Device, Your Data: How On-Device AI Works
· Updated July 4, 2026Most AI apps send everything you type to a server somewhere. Your questions, your mistakes, your learning gaps. All of it logged, stored, and potentially used for training data. We think that’s a bad deal, especially for learning, where the whole point is being free to ask the questions you’d be embarrassed to ask out loud.
How Yapademy handles AI differently
Yapademy includes a built-in AI chat for every tutorial. It can answer your questions, explain concepts, and generate quiz questions on the fly. The key difference: it runs entirely on your device.
When you chat with the AI in Yapademy, your messages never leave your phone or browser. There’s no server processing your questions. No logs of what you asked. No data collected about your learning gaps or study habits.
How on-device AI actually works
We use Google’s Gemma 4 models, running through Google AI Edge with WebGPU acceleration in the browser. The model downloads once (a few hundred MB, cached on your device) and then runs locally. After that, everything happens on-device, even without an internet connection.
What this means for you
- Total privacy: Nobody sees what you’re learning or asking about
- Works offline: Study on a plane, in the subway, or anywhere without signal
- Fast responses: No waiting for a server round trip
- No usage meter: Once the model is installed, chat, narration, and quiz generation are unlimited
- You’re in control: Delete the model and all data is gone instantly
What about tutorial generation?
Tutorial generation itself uses cloud AI because it requires more powerful models to create high-quality interactive content. But once a tutorial is on your device, all interactions with it (chatting, quizzing, exploring) happen locally.
This is the tradeoff we made: use the cloud for the heavy lifting of content creation, then keep everything else private and on-device.
